ANZA: Driver killed in head-on crash is identified

The 51-year-old man killed in a head-on collision Monday, June 8 in Anza has been identified by coroner’s officials as Anza resident Steven Rushing.

Rushing was driving his Saturn SL1 south on Terwilliger Road when he collided with a Ford Ranger driven by 56-year-old William Gibson, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.

One of the drivers – it was not clear which – crossed over the dividing line on Terwilliger near Ovenshire Road, causing the accident, CHP Officer Darren Meyer wrote in the release.

Both drivers were trapped inside their vehicles. Rushing, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. Once Gibson was extracted, he was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar with major injuries, Meyer wrote.

Alcohol and drugs have not been ruled out as a factor in the crash, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Osteen said Tuesday.
