Chase ends in crash, fatal deputy-involved shooting in Cerritos

CERRITOS, Calif. (KABC) —
A suspect was fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies in the 17200 block of Pires Avenue in Cerritos Thursday afternoon.
The suspect led Lakewood sheriff’s deputies on a short chase before crashing into a fire hydrant, sending a geyser into the air and water gushing onto the streets. Deputies opened fire as the situation escalated. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
What led up to the fatal deputy-involved shooting remains unknown. No deputies were injured.
The investigation is being led by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and the Internal Affairs Bureau, which is routine protocol following deputy-involved shootings.
