A 5-year-old girl was accidentally left aboard a Los Angeles-bound bus, say California Highway Patrol officers who reunited the child with her mother.

The incident began about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, July 2, at the TA travel center along Dillon Road in Coachella, where the mother visited a restroom to diaper her 2-year-old son — leaving her daughter on the bus.

“When the mother emerged from the restroom, the bus was gone,” CHP Officer Darren Meyer said in a written statement.

The woman called 911.

Beaumont-based CHP officers spotted the bus on Interstate 10 near the Main Street overpass in Cabazon, where they conducted a traffic stop and search.

“The child was … asleep in a rear seat,” according to the statement. “The bus was moved to the Morongo Casino Travel Center while arrangements were made to reunite the family.”
