ORANGE – A 34-year-old man died late Wednesday morning in a crash on the westbound 22 freeway near Glassell Street, causing two lanes of the freeway to be closed, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The man was driving westbound on the freeway shortly before 11 a.m. in a white Ford Explorer when, for an unknown reason, he swerved and hit the center divider just west of Glassell Street, CHP Officer Florentino Olivera said.
Officials said the crash caused the SUV to roll several times before it landed back on its wheels.
“A witness stated that the man was tossed around inside the SUV when it was rolling,” Olivera said.
Authorities said the man was likely not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and was found partially out of the car when Orange Fire Department arrived.
Fire officials pronounced the man dead on the freeway and his name was not immediately released.
No one else was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, Olivera said.
CHP officers initially closed the carpool and two adjacent lanes after the crash, but reopened the middle lane before noon.
The remaining lanes reopened shortly before 1:55 p.m.
