Passenger dies when airborne SUV crashes into Moreno Valley garage
A woman died and a second person was hospitalized after the SUV they were traveling in crashed and wedged between the garage of a Moreno Valley home and two vehicles in the driveway Monday night, April 11, authorities said.
Riverside County deputies and Cal Fire firefighters responded to the 11000 block of Indian Street at about 11:15 p.m. and found the two people trapped inside their vehicle, according to the fire department.
Video from OnSceneTV showed an Acura SUV that appeared to have blown through a chain-link fence and crashed between another SUV and the garage, with a pick-up truck nearby.
The home sits just north of Ironwood Avenue.
Both occupants of the SUV were freed from the wreck and the driver was taken by ambulance to a hospital, Sgt. Robert Grmusha said.
The passenger, identified by sheriff’s officials as Keonia Brown, 40, of Moreno Valley, suffered major traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, Grmusha said.
The SUV was traveling northbound on Indian Street at a high rate of speed when it veered across the southbound lane, struck the curb on the west side of the street and became airborne before colliding with the pickup truck and the garage, Grmusha said.
What caused the SUV to veer to the left and whether drugs, alcohol or distracted driving were involved were not immediately known.
No injuries were reported among people inside the house.
