A police pursuit in Rancho Cucamonga ended when a fleeing Hummer plummeted into a 12-feet-deep culvert and landed on its roof, severely injuring all three occupants, sheriff’s officials say.
The chase began at 9:50 a.m. Sunday, April 26, when a deputy noticed the black 2007 Hummer H3 near Ranch Gate and Hillside Roads, where officials say a witness reported that the Hummer might have been involved in a stolen vehicle case that the deputy was investigating.
The pursuit continued into a wash where the Hummer rammed the patrol car and raced away, investigators said in a written statement.
Roughly a mile southeast of the chase’s starting point, the Hummer made a right turn into a county flood control area near Banyan and Sapphire Streets and collided with large bushes, knocking the Hummer out of control.
“The Hummer drove through a chain line fence…and fell approximately 12 feet onto its roof in a cement culvert,” according to the statement.
Hospitalized were 31-year-old Rancho Cucamonga resident Steven Mercado and two passengers, whose names were not released.
