A 22-year-old Burbank woman suffered critical injuries after her car drifted across a highway in the San Bernardino Mountains and crashed head-on into an SUV driven by a local woman, say California Highway Patrol officers.

The wreck was reported at 6:46 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, along Highway 330 just south of the middle passing lanes. The highway links the mountaintop town of Running Springs with the San Bernardino Valley city of Highland.

Madeline Weiss was driving down the mountain in a gray 1986 Honda Accord.

“Weiss was negotiating a right-hand turn (and crossed) over the double yellow lines and into oncoming traffic,” Officer Juan C. Quintero said in a written statement.

Her Accord slammed into a gray 2001 Nissan Xterra SUV driven by 64-year-old Running Springs resident Lorraine Callison who was headed up the mountain, according to the statement. Both vehicles were travelling about 45 mph, according to the preliminary investigation.

Callison and her 14-year-old passenger complained of pain and were taken to Loma Linda Univeristy Medical Center as a precaution. Weiss was taken to the same hospital for treatment of major injuries.

Anyone with additional information may call Officer Mariano Rivas at 909-867-2791.
