Five people were injured Saturday, July 4, when a passenger on a Greyhound bus grabbed the steering wheel from the driver, crashing it into a ravine off of Interstate 10 and through a chain link fence, CHP officials said.

After the bus crashed about 2:50 p.m Saturday on the westbound side of Interstate 10 west of South Waterman Avenue, the man broke one of the bus’s windows and jumped out, CHP Sgt. D.L. “Grady” Stevens said. He ran to the parking lot of the Olive Garden restaurant on Hospitality Lane before collapsing.

That’s when he was taken into custody and transported via ambulance to the Loma Linda University Medical Center to be treated for a gashed forearm and a lower-back injury.

The other injured passengers were also transported via ground ambulance to Loma Linda University Medical Center after complaining of pain, Stevens said. About 21 passengers were inside the bus when it crashed.

Stevens said CHP officials are considering pursuing criminal charges for the suspect.

Story is developing, check back for more information.
