A fatal weekend motorcycle crash beside Big Bear Lake happened when a motorist crossed the center line of a mountain highway and collided with the 69-year-old rider from Big Bear City, say California Highway Patrol officers.

Dennis Stevens died at Bear Valley Hospital soon after the 1:12 p.m. wreck along Highway 38 — also known as North Shore Drive — east of Canyon Road near the lakeside community of Fawnskin.

Stevens was riding a 2015 Indian Scout east along Highway 38 when he was hit by a westbound 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 18-year-old Hesperia resident Michael Gardner, Officer Juan C. Quintero said in a written statement.

“Mr. Gardner allowed his vehicle to veer over the double yellow lines, striking Mr. Stevens … head-on,” according to the statement.

Anyone with additional information may call Officer Paul Adamson at the CHP office in Running Springs at 909-867-2791.
