SAN BERNARDINO: Night-time Amtrak accident kills man

A nighttime accident killed a man and halted an Amtrak passenger train in San Bernardino, say city police and railroad officials.

The incident was reported at 8:27 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, along the railroad tracks that parallel I-215 at 16th Street, about 1-1/2 miles north of downtown.

The victim died at the scene. He appeared to be in his 20s or 30s, said police Lt. Adam Affrunti. Officers were still investigating whether the man committed suicide or died accidentally, Affrunti said.

The death stopped all passenger and freight traffic along the route, which connects the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to widespread locations farther east.

“It was an Amtrak train, but it happened our our line,” BNSF spokeswoman Lena Kent said about an hour after the incident. “We have our line shut down. All trains will be holding.

“It’s one of the busiest lines in the country. We run (about) 90 trains a day through that area.”

Efforts to reach Amtrak spokespersons were unsuccessful.
