Authorities have identified the Greyhound bus passenger they arrested Saturday, July 4, after they say he grabbed the steering wheel and caused a crash on Interstate 10 in San Bernardino.
Jose Alberto Macias Rodriguez, 43, was booked into the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a bus driver and fleeing the scene of a crash, jail logs show. Bail was set at $75,000.
The bus was headed west near South Waterman Avenue about 3 p.m. when Rodriguez got out of his seat, took the wheel and turned the bus to the right, witnesses told the California Highway Patrol.
The bus hit a chain link fence and barreled into a ravine, injuring five passengers, CHP officials said.
Rodriguez then squeezed through a broken window and ran into a nearby parking lot before collapsing. He was arrested a short time later at the location, jail logs show.
Paramedics took Rodriguez and the other injured passengers to hospitals.
