Alcohol or drugs are suspected of contributing to a fatal head-on crash along a mountain highway, say California Highway Patrol officers and Riverside County coroner’s officials.
Fifty-year-old Mountain Center resident Teresa Gonzales died at the scene of the 6:50 p.m. wreck Saturday, April 18, along Highway 74 east of Bull Canyon Road, near Santa Rosa Summit. The crash site is about 7 miles west of Pinyon Pines and roughly 15 miles southeast of Mountain Center.
Gonzales was driving west in her 1990 Ford F150 pickup truck that crossed the double yellow lines and hit an eastbound 2007 Kia Sorrento, Officer Darren Meyer said in a written statement.
The Kia was being driven by 83-year-old Sioux Falls, South Dakota, resident Danny Deubler, according to the statement. Deubler and his 83-year-old wife, Kathy, were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.
“Alcohol and/or drugs are suspected to be a contributing factor in this collision,” Meyer wrote.
